I’ve always had this weird desire to have hidden rooms and doors in my house. Maybe it comes from watching too much of the 1966 Batman series. Or maybe it’s from The Secret Garden being a childhood favorite, but I always found it a cool concept. Especially the old “bookcase in the study is actually a door” thing, like in The Addams Family.

This might be a new trend in housing. I plan to one day be able to have a home completely custom built, and a “secret” room was always something that I thought about including.

It might also be something that would appeal to a homebuyer. My dad told me a story about a house that his parents were trying to sell. Earlier, they had told my dad and his brother that they could paint their bedroom any color they wanted, so long as they painted it. Any color. They chose black. It looked wretched, of course, but a promise is a promise. Later, when they were selling the house, the buyers saw the all-black room and apparently it sealed the deal. There’s no real extra value in a black room or a secret door, but they are the types of quirky things that might make a house stand out to a buyer.

I’m not sure exactly what I would do if I had a secret room, except immediately show it off to everyone I know, and thus, make it lose it’s secretive quality. Or maybe I would store some amontillado in there and, well, you know the rest…
