If you’re a die-hard Star Wars fan, don’t bother reading farther, because you probably know all of this.
I’ve never actually seen the Star Wars Holiday Special all the way through before. I watched the short cartoon feature Boba Fett, and I heard all kinds of trivia about it, but I never just sat down and watched the whole thing.
I finally did it, since it was just posted on YouTube.
A warning. It is bad. Really bad. Not MST3K bad, not “so bad it’s good” bad, not Michael Jackson bad. It’s awful. My advice: watch it once to say you did, but never watch again. Trust me, you won’t want to. The cartoon is the only thing close to watchable, and even it has a very “interesting” style of animation.
Here is a summary of what you will see if you watch the Holiday Special:
- Straight-up wookiee grunts for upwards of 20 minutes. No exaggeration.
- Art Carney trying way too hard, and being totally out of place.
- A Cantina sequence with Bea Arthur for no reason at all.
- A passable cartoon short with the first appearance of Boba Fett.
- Jefferson Starship music video used to distract Imperials, who have apparently taken the brown acid.
- Carrie Fisher singing a song about something.
- Mark Hamill who has turned into a blindingly white, sparkling golden blonde man.
- Lots of reused footage from A New Hope.
- Harrison Ford looking like an adult acting in a elementary school play
I – forgot – about Carrie Fisher singing… Mind shutting down… So – cold – so very cold.
