First off, non-binding house resolutions are generally pointless and a waste of time.

There were three of these non-laws voted on this year for various cultural and religious celebrations: Ramadan (Islam), Diwali (Indian/Hindu), and Christmas (Christianity). All three have generally the same language, although the Ramadan one also has text about prejudice towards law-abiding Muslims citizens post-9/11. Fine.

The Ramadan vote was taken on October 2, 2007. It was passed unanimously with 376 voting “yea” and 0 voting “nay”.

The Diwali vote was taken on October 29th, 2007. It also passed unanimously with 358 voting “yea” and 0 voting “nay”.

The Christmas vote was taken on December 11th, 2007. It also…no wait. It did not pass unanimously. There were 372 voting “yea” and 9 voting “nay”. What the…?

Who are these 9, and how did they vote on the first two?

Name Ramadan Diwali Christmas
Ackerman Yea Yea Nay
Clarke Yea Yea Nay
DeGette Yea Yea Nay
Hastings (FL) Yea Didn’t vote Nay
Lee Didn’t vote Yea Nay
McDermott Yea Yea Nay
Scott (VA) Yea Yea Nay
Stark Yea Yea Nay
Woolsey Yea Yea Nay

I want to stress again that all 3 of these resolutions are stupid and pointless. But seriously, what’s up
with these guys? Ramadan and Diwali are worthy of a resolution, but not Christmas?

If you read the titles carefully you’ll see that the votes are all for recognizing different religious EVENTS, but the Christmas one has a suspicious addition: “Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.”

These representatives believed that it’s inappropriate for the Federal government to deem one faith more important than the next.

Empires rise and fall in the fine print.

If you read the actual text of the resolutions, they all highlight the importance of each religion and each event. And they are all non-binding. They don’t create any laws or affect anything.

The strange thing is that they’re all Democrats. It’s as if the entire party is aligned with Satan somehow…

  • minywheats says:

wheres the jewish holiday vote? wheres the Pagan holiday vote? wheres the atheist holiday vote? wheres the holiday vote for what ever american indians believe? wheres the vote for what ever people in africa believe?

    this is all fucking stupid

  • mgroves says:

Well, there’s plenty of Democrats who didn’t vote ‘nay’ on any of these bills.

These 9 didn’t bother to debate the bill, so I can only assume they’re some sort of anti-Christian nuts. To minywheats’ point, these resolutions are stupid, but my point is that Christianity raises these guys’ ire, but not the others.

  • Jonny says:

    They’re not “anti-Christian nuts” – they’re “anti Jesus-freaks”.

  • mgroves says:

Well, whatever disparaging term you want to use. But their disparagement is inconsistent, you see.

  • Jonny says:

No I think they constantly want to belittle Christians.
