Chances are that you’ve never played NiGHTS Into Dreams, a classic game that was first released for the Sega Saturn. NiGHTS is a 3d “on rails” game from the famous Sonic Team in which you fly through a course collecting various tokens and doing “combos” to increase your score. The game was critically acclaimed for it’s amazing graphics, music, and innovative gameplay. The game was introduced with a controller that had an analog stick, around the same time the N64 came out and also had an analog stick.

The NiGHTS “franchise” to date consists of 1 Saturn game, 1 “expansion” (Christmas expansion), and an unlockable mini-game for the GBA, as well as numerous cameos in other Sega games.

According to the latest rumors, confidence is high that a NiGHTS game is coming to the Nintendo Wii. There are actually several different vectors to this rumor:

  • Sega Saturn rumored coming to the VC
  • A “teaser” on the back of some official Nintendo magazine: a rough astrological-outline in stars which could be the main character from NiGHTS.
  • This magazine is coming out in April, an infamously cruel month for gaming magazines. However, NiGHTS and April Fool’s have some history, since if Christmas NiGHTS was played on April Fool’s Day, players unlock another character.
  • Sonic Team had been working on a NiGHTS game for Dreamcast that was slated to come with a “motion sensitive” controller, but was stopped due to the Dreamcast totally eating it.
  • There was a recent poll at Sega.com asking what franchise should be revived. NiGHTS owned all the other franchises in that poll.

I think the most likely scenario is NiGHTS coming to the VC, but there’s one problem: the VC’s internal storage is only 512 meg. I’m sure NiGHTS could fit, but suddenly we run up against the tiny amount of storage. If Nintendo is unwilling to come out with a hard drive, or allow third party USB storage, NiGHTS and Saturn games on the VC seem very unlikely to me.

So anyway, if you haven’t played NiGHTS before, download the GBA rom and emulator that I attached below. It’s a poor proxy for the actual Saturn game, but it’s worth playing for a bit.

Yes, I just pirated a mini-game that was featured on two Gamecube games as a GBA download in the time it took you to pirate 30 Xbox 360 games.

I remember this game. It was one of the few games that I actually owned for the Saturn. I was a really big SEGA fan, having owned the SMS instead of the NES and taking the brunt of my peers cruelty for it. But I stuck by it. I even stuck around through the 32x debacle. I could not, however, stand through the Saturn’s dismal trickle of software.

I loved NiGHTS, but that was about it for me and the Saturn. I returned the system after finishing it, back when stores would still let you do that.

Actually, the game is called NiGHTS Journey of Dreams. And it is for Wii.

I’m not sure who or what you are correcting…but just to be clear, here are the NiGHTS games that I know of:

    NiGHTS into Dreams (Saturn)
    Christmas NiGHTS (Saturn)
    NiGHTS mini-game (GBA)
    NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (Wii)
    NiGHTS into Dreams (PS2–coming soon)
