How fast is your favorite browser in terms of interpreting JavaScript? This page will test Try/Catch, Layer movement, Random numbers, math, DOM, arrays, strings, and AJAX.

The winner? If you’ve read MD Groves for any amount of time, you know that this answer is going to satisfy my confirmation bias:

Opera!

Opera is about 3 times as fast as IE and about 4 times as fast as Firefox. Yowza. I even tried it for myself (I have all 3 installed):

  • Firefox: 1142 ms
  • IE: 1062ms
  • Opera: 461ms

Obviously, this won’t make a lot of difference, unless, you know, a lot of popular sites start using this crazy “AJAX” thing.

I’ve determined your a browser nazi.

I’ve determined that you are an Opera hater, and you will burn for your crimes!

  • Gerbs says:

1142ms is NOT “about 4 times” as much as 461ms. Someone’s a little bias.

…not that I have anything against Opera though. Can’t we just get along and hate IE equally?

  • Jonny says:

There’s about a 100ms variance to this test. Click the “Run Test” button a couple times and you’ll see for yourself. That means there’s a negligible speed difference between IE and Firefox. Also, cocks.

  • mgroves says:

Okay, my math was a little off. It’s actually about 2.75 times faster. I rounded up to 1200 and down to 400, you see.

And of course I’m biased! But my love of Opera has nothing to do with my hate (or lack of hate) for IE or Firefox. Course, if I was futzing around with CSS all day, maybe I would change my mind.

  • mgroves says:

Wait, if I rounded up to 1200 and down to 400, “4 times as fast” still doesn’t make sense… Not only am I biased, I’m terrible at math.

  • mgroves says:

    Netscape: around 2000ms.
Swift (same engine as Safari): around 450ms.
